Introduction
We have setup an IRC channel for pounced.org users, where you can go to talk to other pounced.org users.
IRC is a type of internet chat, where users can meet in a channel (chat room) and talk with each other. To use IRC you will need an IRC client, or special program which is designed to use IRC, and a registered IRC nickname.
How to use IRC with Pounced.org
We have setup an IRC channel on one of the popular furry IRC networks called AnthroChat. To use IRC you will need to:
- Find a server to connect to
- Get an IRC client
- Register your IRC nick with NickServ on the IRC server
- Register your IRC nick with pounced.org
- Join the #pounced.org channel
Finding a server to connect to
http://anthrochat.net/ has couple of different servers you can choose to connect to. You should go to their website to find a complete list of available servers or choose one from the list below.
- otter.anthrochat.net
- bear.anthrochat.net
- lion.anthrochat.net
- cheetah.anthrochat.net
Getting an IRC client
After you have chosen an IRC server to connect to you'll need a way to connect to it, specifically an IRC client.
There are a lot of IRC clients to choose from, before you go installing any, we recommend that you check to see if your current instant messaging software supports IRC. Quite a few popular instant messaging software packages natively support IRC, such as Trillian, Pidgin, Gaim, kopete, etc.
Otherwise you can download a purpose built IRC client, or use one that is hosted online.
Registering your nick with NickServ on AnthroChat
Because of the way IRC was designed, users could choose what ever nickname they wanted each time they signed on. This creates an immediate security challenge because users can impersonate each other. To solve this problem a program called NickServ was introduced to IRC, this program allows users to register a nickname.
To use the pounced.org IRC channel you will need a registered nickname.
To register your nickname with NickServ do the following
1. Message Nickserv asking to register your nick
/msg NickServ register PASSWORD YOUR_EMAIL
2. Use the pass code in the email sent to you from NickServ to finish the registration
3. Set the password for NickServ in your IRC client.
Registering your nick with pounced.org
As a security measure we require that users who want to join the IRC channel, to register their IRC nick with the website. To do this you'll need to log in to IRC and then message the pounced.org IRC bot with a special registration code.
You can find your registration code on the user profile page, in the field 'IRC Code'. You'll then need to tell the pounced IRC bot this code like so.
/msg pounced_bot register [IRC Code]
i.e.
/msg pounced_bot register e7cd47497b68b94c407a5151b8ad882d
Join the #pounced.org irc channel
Now that you have completed all the necessary steps to join the channel you can. You should be able to tell your IRC client to join the #pounced.org channel.
FAQ/Help
When I Join the channel why don't I get voiced
Please make sure that you have a registered nick with NickServ and have specified your Nickname with the pounced.org website.

A correction needs to be made on step 1.
It should read: /msg NickServ register PASSWORD YOUR_EMAIL

| yeah this process is confusing, I managed to get in dispite the none existance of pounce_bot but todsy it says my password is incorrect and I get denied use of the nickserv help lists. So please rework this process as it is broken and please help me get back on with out having to make up a new nick. |
